Overview

The municipality was created by Decree 1594 in August 1994, and named after the minister Pedro María Carreño. On 5 July 1991, Vichada became a department, with Puerto Carreño as its capital.

The flag of Puerto Carreño was adopted on May 31, 1979 by Decree No. 23 of that year. As expected, municipal authorities wanted to help incite civic pride, which is the reason this flag was created.

Per Article 1, it says that the flag is composed of a yellow stripe (below) and green stripe (above). A white triangle exists on the left. Note that the orders of yellow and green were reversed. Sadly, I'm unable to find any decrees or resolutions published by the municipality which approve the change in color order. Assuming there is nothing that approves this change in the flag, however, it is not known if the flag was flipped upside down intentionally or mistakenly.

Today, the government interprets the colors as: yellow for wealth, green for wealth of flora, and white for peace, kindness, and hospitality. Also, the municipality was created on 5 August 1974, not 1994.
