On 7 July 1950, Chiao Tung University adopted a new flag to reflect the new Communist China. Red, with a five-pointed star at the canton, a simplified university emblem at the upper hoist, and with the university's initials 交大 at the lower fly, all in yellow.

On 29 September 1952, the PRC Ministry of Education issued the 'Principles and rules regarding the designs of the flags and badges of the various levels of schools', which stated that "For the various levels of schools it is not necessary to establish school emblems; school flags only need to use simple colours, and it is sufficient to show the school names, and it is not necessary to add symbols." As a result the 1950 university flag was abolished.
